How the German citizenship test works

Understand the published format, separate official procedure from practice, and prepare without relying on promises or shortcuts.

The test at a glance

The German citizenship test (Einbürgerungstest) checks knowledge of Germany’s legal order, society and everyday life. The related “Leben in Deutschland” test uses the same question format. According to BAMF’s published information, a test sheet contains 33 multiple-choice questions and the time limit is 60 minutes. Each question offers four answers.

  • 33questions on a test sheet
  • 60 minpublished time limit
  • 30 + 3general and state questions

For current, binding details about registration, recognized test centers, fees, result documents and exceptions, use BAMF and the competent authority. Those details can change and are not decided by Road to Germany.

How the questions are selected

The public catalog contains 300 general questions and 160 federal-state questions: 10 for each of Germany’s 16 states. A test sheet normally combines 30 general questions with three questions for the state registered for the test. The catalog lets you study the possible material, but memorizing an answer position is fragile: answer order can vary, and understanding the wording helps when two options look similar.

Start by confirming the state that applies to your registration. Then keep the state set separate in your study plan. Ten focused state questions are manageable, but they are easy to neglect if you only repeat the general catalog.

Before and on test day

  1. Use an approved test center. Find local options through BAMF-NAvI or information from your authority.
  2. Check the center’s instructions. Registration deadlines, documents and payment procedures belong to the center, not to a practice app.
  3. Practice reading under time pressure. Sixty minutes is generous only if unfamiliar civic vocabulary does not stop you.
  4. Read every option. Look for small differences in institutions, rights, responsibilities and dates.
  5. Rely on official correspondence. Only the responsible body can confirm your appointment and result.

What useful practice looks like

A productive session is more than answering many questions. First answer without help. Then read why the correct option fits, write down one unfamiliar German term and return to mistakes after a delay. A timed 33-question simulation is useful later, after you have covered the topic groups and your state set.

A simple 30-minute session

Answer 15–20 mixed questions, review every mistake, note three words, and finish with five previously missed questions. Stop when attention drops; consistent review is more useful than a long unfocused session.

Common misconceptions

“A practice app registers me for the test.”
No. Registration and administration belong to approved test centers and authorities.
“Translations are used in the real test.”
Translations are a learning aid. The official test is taken in German.
“Repeating mock tests guarantees a result.”
No study method guarantees an exam or naturalization outcome. Use mock tests to find gaps, then return to explanations and sources.
